Saturday, August 15th, an enthusiastic group of lawyers gathered at 8 AM to build walls, both interior and exterior, for the Bar's Habitat House. This was a fun day! We actually finished nailing the walls together, loading them on the truck and cleaning our workspace by 10:30 AM, a new record for Habitat!
Building on Site will begin on Wednesday, September 2nd with the Jimmy Johnson Labor of Love Blitz!
We will raise the walls on the foundation on September 2nd. We need ten to twelve volunteers on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday that week. The minimum age for volunteers is 18! After raising the walls, we will erect roof trusses, install roof sheating, paper and shingles. We will install house wrap, vinyl siding, windows, exterior doors, porch beam decking and railings.
Food and refreshments will be provided. Shifts are 8 AM until Noon or 8 AM until 3 PM. Please stay for the entire shift you choose. This is an exciting time to work because houses will be going up quickly all around. The Wake Forest University house is right next door
After the Blitz - Sept 8th thru completion!
We hope to have crews working every Tuesday and Saturday until the house is finished. In general, only 10 -15 workers are needed each shift. We encourage firms to take a day. If your firm prefers to work on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, that can be arranged; just give us a call.
General Rules/Information:
- Hard hats are required.
- Age Limits for Volunteers During the first four days (Wed., Sept. 2nd through Sat., Sept. 5th), the minimum age for volunteers is 18. Later, some 16 or 17 year-olds may be allowed, but only for ground work.
- Footwear No flip flops, sandals or crocs. Work boots or safety shoes are best. Tennis shoes are allowed.
- Food/Refreshments - Habitat provides coffee, breakfast bars or something similar each morning, and paper products. During the blitz, food will be provided. Later, groups are responsible for their own lunches. Generally you plan for about 30 people.
- Shifts: 8 to Noon or 8 to 3 (site clean-up is built into the time.)
- Parking: Park on street and in church or school parking lot.
- Tools: All tools are provided. Can bring hammers, tool belts if you like.
Donations Still Needed! We are still about $10,000 short of reaching $55,000, which is the cost of building the house. Both your financial support and your labor are needed to make this a success.
